Amnesty International is a global movement of over 10 million people across more than 170 countries. We are independent of any government, political ideology, economic interest or religion, and united in protecting and promoting human rights. About our Local Chapter
The local chapter of Amnesty International is active on a variety of human rights issues, and welcomes newcomers to join us!
Amnesty International has been active in the Hamilton/Burlington area for decades, with groups active at different times in Hamilton, Burlington, and at McMaster University. The current group includes members from Hamilton and Burlington, and meets on-line monthly from September through June. We meet on the 4th Monday of the month, at 7:30 pm. Our meetings generally feature a presentation or speaker on a human rights issue of concern, and letter-writing.

GENERAL ACTIONS: We maintain an up-to-date list of concrete (and easy!) actions you can take to move the needle on human rights issues worldwide. Learn more→.
URGENT ACTIONS: When an individual is in immediate danger of a human rights violation, Amnesty International mobilizes their Urgent Action Network (this includes you, if you participate in an action!) to protect them. Amnesty International’s Urgent Action Network works together to protect people worldwide from the following human rights abuses: torture, unlawful arrest, “disappearance” in detention, denial of medical care, lawful and unlawful executions. Explore current Urgent Actions→.
LOCAL CASE OF HUSEYIN CELIL: Learn about a longtime local campaign to free Huseyin Celil, a Canadian citizen, husband, and father of 4 boys. In 2006, he traveled to Uzebekistan and was arrested on false charges, delivered to Chinese prison, tortured, and forced to sign a confession. Canadian officials were not allowed to attend his trial. His children have grown up in our backyard without him, and 18 years later we have next to no answers. Learn more and become involved here→.
